Albins Performance Transmissions Porsche 915 6-Speed Sequential Gearbox – Motorsport-Grade Drivetrain Upgrade
The Albins Performance Transmissions A17-915 6-speed sequential gearbox is a purpose-built motorsport transmission developed as a high-performance replacement for the standard Porsche 915 unit. Designed for off-road and competition use, this gearbox delivers dramatically faster shifts, increased strength and superior reliability—without requiring structural modifications to the vehicle.
Fits:
- Porsche 911 1968-1973 2.2L / 2.4L / 2.7L RS LWB (F)
- Porsche 911 1974-1977 2.7L / 1976-77 3.0 Carrera
- Porsche 911 1978-1983 3.0L / SC
The A17-915 retains the original mounting architecture and
connection points for cable-operated clutch and throttle linkages, allowing it
to integrate cleanly into many Porsche 915-equipped platforms. While fitment
may vary between production vehicles, the design philosophy prioritises
compatibility alongside race-level performance.
The A17-915 is engineered to handle torque outputs of up to 600Nm, making it suitable for high-performance and competition applications. Lubrication and cooling are managed through the transmission oil, which is continuously circulated by an integrated internal oil pump.
Oil is directed from the pump to an external cooler before returning to the transmission via the inlet port. From there, it is distributed through a network of purpose-designed internal oil galleries, ensuring consistent lubrication and temperature control across all critical components.
All bearings used within the transmission are roller or ball types, minimising friction while simplifying long-term servicing. The gearbox features a conventional two-bearing shaft layout, combined with an unconventional reverse gear placement. This innovative configuration allows for an exceptionally compact gearset, increasing overall rigidity and strength.
Strategically positioned inspection ports within the transmission housing allow rapid visual checks of gears and dog rings without requiring full disassembly—ideal for motorsport maintenance schedules.
The gears and shafts are heat treated, precision gear-profile ground, shot peened and isotropically polished as standard, ensuring tight tolerances, enhanced durability and smooth operation. The limited-slip differential is a plate-style unit, available with multiple ramp angle options to suit different driving and competition requirements.
Both gear selection travel limits and reverse lock-out travel limits must be correctly set and observed to ensure smooth, reliable and repeatable operation.
Use of the Albins A17 sequential shifter mechanism is strongly recommended, as it has been specifically engineered to operate in conjunction with the A17-915 transmission. If an alternative shifter is employed, it is essential that the gear lever is equipped with positive travel stops. While the A17-915 features internal travel limiters, external stops at the gear lever help prevent excessive movement that could overload the selector rod and related drivetrain components.
Prior to use, the clearance between the release bearing and clutch diaphragm fingers should be verified in accordance with the clutch manufacturer’s specifications. Additionally, a clutch pedal stop must be installed to prevent over-travel of the clutch spring, reducing wear and protecting the clutch assembly.
