A Quick Look at Porsche

Porsche information on this page is based on details supplied by the manufacturer or distributor, plus any OE references provided with the parts.

Choosing the Right Fit for Your Porsche

Where Porsche is listed for Porsche, use the supplied model coverage and OE references to confirm suitability. Check details that commonly affect fitment such as model year, side/position, and connector type where relevant.

  • Typical reasons people replace these parts include maintaining originality, keeping factory specification, and choosing the latest genuine revisions for peace of mind.
  • Common real-world issues behind many Porsche repairs are age and mileage: oil leaks, cooling system fatigue, brake and suspension wear, corrosion and electrical faults from moisture or heat cycling.
  • Before ordering, confirm part numbers against VIN or option/PR codes, especially for safety‑critical or complex components.
  • When upgrading, decide whether you want pure originality or performance changes, as some aftermarket options may suit specific goals better than genuine.
  • For bigger jobs, replace related seals, hardware and consumables at the same time to avoid repeat labour and compatibility issues.
  • Where available, follow the manufacturer’s fitting and bedding‑in guidance to get the best performance and longevity.

What This Product Does:

  • Connects the crankshaft to the camshaft(s) (and in this case, also the oil-pump drive path) ensuring correct timing of valves and pumps. (Implicit from “crank to oil pump” description)
  • Maintains precise synchronization of the engine’s internal components such as pistons, valves and oil pump gear drive — crucial for optimal engine operation.
  • Is built to factory Porsche specification, so it meets the tolerances and durability demanded by high-performance motors.

Symptoms Of Failure:
  • Audible rattling or clattering noises from the timing-cover or front of engine especially at cold start or idle. The chain may slop or hit guides.
  • A illuminated Check Engine Light (CEL) related to cam/crank correlation faults— because timing drift causes sensor readings to fall out of expected range.
  • Rough idle, misfires or reduced performance due to valve timing being off.
  • In extreme cases: the engine may fail to start or stop running if the chain has jumped teeth or broken.
  • Often increased wear on related components (guides, tensioners) and higher risk of major internal damage if left unchecked.

Why Replacement Matters:
  • The timing chain is a critical engine component. When it fails or is out-of-spec, valve timing is compromised which can lead to piston/valve interference (in an interference engine), catastrophic damage, or complete engine failure.
  • A worn chain may allow slack or jump teeth, affecting engine performance, reliability and lifespan. Replacing the chain restores factory-level timing accuracy and performance.
  • Because installation often involves major labour (removing covers, possibly oil pump, timing drive components), doing the replacement proactively saves cost compared with dealing with catastrophic failure later.
  • Ensures continued safe, reliable operation of the vehicle under all conditions (high rpm, performance demands, everyday use).

What This Product Does:

  • The timing chain is a Porsche component designed for certain Porsche models (for example, the 718 Boxster, 718 Cayman, 718 Spyder, and possibly newer ones) to control the timing between the crankshaft and the camshaft(s).
  • Its role is to synchronise the valves opening/closing with piston movement — ensuring engine timing stays accurate under load.
  • As the chain rotates, it transmits mechanical power from the crankshaft to camshaft(s) so that the proper valve events happen at the correct times.

Symptoms Of Failure:
  • Rattling noise or audible ticking/knocking from the engine’s timing cover area — often when starting cold or idling.
  • Check Engine Light (CEL) setting, often related to cam/crank correlation or timing issues.
  • Poor engine performance — misfires, rough idle, reduced power or hesitation due to the timing going out of spec.
  • In worst-case: the engine may fail to start if the chain has jumped teeth or broken entirely.
  • High mileage wear: If the car has many km/miles, chain stretch becomes more likely.

Why Replacement Matters:
  • A properly functioning timing chain is critical for engine health. If timing is off, valves and pistons can collide (in interference engines), causing serious and expensive damage.
  • Replacing the chain before a major failure prevents catastrophic outcomes and engine downtime.
  • Over time, even if not broken, wear will degrade performance and reliability — so replacing a worn chain restores optimal operation.
  • Since this is an OEM Porsche part, it ensures fitment, durability and specification compliance for the vehicle it’s designed for, giving confidence in quality.
  • Neglecting a bad chain can lead to much higher repair costs, such as cylinder head work or complete engine replacement.

Position on Vehicle: Part of the engine coolant circulation system
 Replaces: 98710650203
Function: Transfers coolant within the engine cooling circuit, maintaining stable operating temperatures.

Using a genuine OEM coolant hose ensures the cooling system maintains proper flow, prevents overheating, and supports the long service life expected of a Porsche flat-six engine. This part is essential for maintaining factory performance, especially on aging or high-mileage 987 models where rubber hoses naturally harden or deteriorate over time.

Coolant hoses operate under high temperature and pressure. Over time, age, heat cycles and coolant exposure cause internal deterioration or external cracking. A compromised hose can lead to:
 Coolant leaks Engine overheating
 Sudden loss of coolant pressure
 Potential engine damage.

Replacing worn hoses with a Genuine Porsche unit ensures proper sealing, correct routing and dependable cooling system function.

Typical reasons to replace:
• Visible cracking, bulging or soft spots
Coolant smell or residue around hose ends
 Overheating issues or fluctuating temperatures
During cooling system service (pumps, thermostats, radiators)
• Preventative maintenance on older 987 models.

What These Product Do:

This Engine Timing Chain Kit rebuilds the entire timing system responsible for synchronizing the crankshaft and camshafts. It includes the timing chain, hydraulic tensioner, and all major guide/slide rails. Together, these components:

  • Keep the timing chain properly tensioned
  • Guide the chain smoothly around the engine’s timing path
  • Maintain precise valve timing for correct combustion
  • Reduce chain vibration, noise, and wear
  • Ensure stable performance across all RPM ranges

Symptoms of Timing Chain System Failure:
  • Rattling or metallic chain noise, especially at cold start
  • Check Engine Light, often with cam/crank correlation codes
  • Rough idle, hesitation or misfires due to incorrect valve timing
  • Loss of power or reduced performance
  • Metal shavings in the oil from worn guides or chain
  • Oil leaks from the tensioner area
  • Hard starting or no start if timing becomes severely out of sync

Why Replacement Matters:
  • Prevents catastrophic engine failure: A stretched chain or broken guide can cause the chain to jump teeth, leading to valve-to-piston contact — often requiring a full engine rebuild.
  • Restores quiet, smooth operation: New guides, tensioners, and chain eliminate rattles and vibration.
  • Ensures precise valve timing: Proper timing is essential for power, fuel efficiency, and correct emissions.
  • Protects your engine long-term: Worn timing components accelerate wear on other internal engine parts.

What This Product Does:

  • The guide/slide rail helps maintain correct path and tension for the timing chain, preventing the chain from flopping, jumping, or hitting other components.

Symptoms Of Failure:
  • Rattling or clattering noise from the timing chain cover area (especially at cold start or idle) because the chain may be loose and hitting the guide/rail or adjacent parts.
  • Poor engine performance: misfires, rough idle, hesitation on acceleration. This is because incorrect timing = valves and pistons not synchronised.
  • Check Engine Light: with timing or cam/crank correlation codes. If the chain jumps or the guide fails significantly, the timing can get out of spec, triggering the ECU.
  • Metal shavings in oil or oil pan (in more advanced wear). If the chain or guide breaks up, fragments can circulate.
  • Engine won’t start or sudden failure in worst-case: if timing chain jumps many teeth or breaks, the engine may stop or suffer internal damage.

Why Replacement Matters:
  • Because the timing chain and its guides are critical for engine timing: if the guide rail fails and allows the chain to slip, the engine’s valve timing will go off. This can lead to serious internal engine damage (valves hitting pistons, heavy wear) in many high-performance engines.
  • Replacing the guide rail (and possibly the chain, tensioners, etc) before catastrophic failure helps avoid a full engine rebuild or replacement, which is far more expensive.
  • Even though the part itself may not be extremely expensive (the guide rail), the labour cost of access is high (because to reach it you may need to remove covers, maybe ancillary components) — doing it early is more cost-effective.
  • Ensures the engine continues to operate as designed, maintaining performance, reliability and longevity.
