The distributor plays a critical role in delivering ignition to the cylinders at precisely the right time. Where a drive belt is incorporated within the distributor assembly, the condition of that belt is essential to maintaining correct synchronisation. A worn, stretched, cracked or broken belt can disrupt distributor operation and lead to ignition timing problems, misfires or loss of correct ignition distribution.

• Correct ignition timing is fundamental to engine performance. The spark must occur at the appropriate point in the combustion cycle, and the distributor drive mechanism must remain correctly synchronised for this to happen consistently.
• A worn or stretched distributor belt may introduce unwanted movement or incorrect synchronisation within the distributor. This can contribute to inconsistent ignition, rough running, reduced power and poor throttle response.
• More significantly, a belt that breaks can interrupt the intended operation of the distributor assembly. Depending on the ignition-system configuration, this may result in serious misfiring or loss of correct ignition to affected cylinders.
• Age is an important consideration with distributor drive belts. Rubber components can deteriorate even on vehicles covering relatively little mileage.
