Diagram Ref No 17
Also described as an A/C refrigerant suction hose, the pipe forms part of the sealed air-conditioning circuit and carries low-pressure refrigerant gas from the evaporator side of the system back toward the air-conditioning compressor.
What This Product Does:
The A/C suction pipe completes an essential part of the refrigeration cycle.
After refrigerant has passed through the evaporator and absorbed heat from the cabin, it returns as low-pressure gas toward the compressor.
The suction line is responsible for:
- Carrying low-pressure refrigerant back to the compressor
- Maintaining a sealed refrigerant circuit
- Supporting correct low-side A/C pressure
- Allowing refrigerant to circulate continuously
- Helping maintain effective cabin cooling
- Providing the correct factory routing between A/C components
- Absorbing vibration and movement through its flexible sections
- Preventing refrigerant loss when properly sealed
Without a leak-free suction pipe, the A/C system cannot maintain the refrigerant charge and pressure balance required for effective cooling.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Common symptoms of a damaged A/C suction pipe include:
- Weak air-conditioning performance
- Warm air from the cabin vents
- A/C cooling becoming progressively worse
- Refrigerant charge repeatedly becoming low
- Oily residue around the hose or fittings
- Visible refrigerant dye around a joint
- Hissing from escaping refrigerant
- Cracked or deteriorated flexible hose sections
- Abrasion or chafing
- Damaged or corroded metal sections
- Leaking connection points
- A/C compressor cycling abnormally
- System unable to maintain pressure
A suction-line leak can sometimes be very small, allowing the system to work temporarily after a recharge before cooling performance gradually deteriorates again.
Why Replacement Matters:
A damaged suction line prevents the A/C system from maintaining its correct refrigerant charge.
Continued refrigerant loss can lead to:
- Reduced cabin cooling
- Incorrect A/C pressures
- Frequent compressor cycling
- Loss of compressor lubrication circulation
- Increased compressor wear
- Complete A/C system shutdown
Replacing a leaking or damaged line restores a sealed path for refrigerant circulation.
