Diagram Ref No 6
The assembly consists of a mounting bracket together with the belt guide or idler roller. Its purpose is to guide the accessory drive belt along the correct path while maintaining accurate belt alignment around the engine’s driven accessories.
As the engine runs, the belt travels continuously around the crankshaft and accessory pulleys. The idler roller provides a smooth rotating surface that supports and redirects the belt so it remains correctly positioned throughout its operating cycle.
Over time, the roller bearing can wear, become noisy or develop excessive play. The pulley can also become damaged or misaligned, while the mounting bracket may suffer wear or physical damage. Replacing a defective assembly helps restore smooth belt operation and protects the belt and surrounding accessory-drive components from secondary damage.
What This Product Does:
The idler bracket and roller help control the route and movement of the engine accessory belt.
The assembly is designed to:
- Guide the Poly-V / accessory belt around the correct drive path.
- Maintain accurate belt alignment.
- Provide a smooth rotating surface for the belt.
- Support consistent belt tracking at different engine speeds.
- Reduce unwanted belt movement.
- Help prevent the belt running off adjacent pulleys.
- Support correct operation of the complete accessory-drive system.
- Reduce unnecessary wear on the belt.
- Replace a noisy, worn, damaged or misaligned original roller assembly.
- Maintain the factory geometry of the belt drive.
The roller does not itself power an accessory. Instead, it redirects and supports the belt so rotational power can be transmitted correctly through the rest of the system.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Possible symptoms include:
- Squealing from the accessory belt area.
- Chirping noises that change with engine speed.
- Grinding or rumbling from the roller bearing.
- Rattling from the belt-drive system.
- Visible pulley wobble.
- Excessive play in the roller.
- Roller feeling rough when turned by hand.
- Pulley failing to rotate freely.
- Belt running off-centre.
- Uneven wear across the belt ribs.
- Fraying along the edge of the belt.
- Belt dust around the pulley area.
- Excessive belt vibration.
- Intermittent belt noise during acceleration or deceleration.
- Damaged pulley running surface.
- Cracks or damage to the mounting bracket.
- Complete pulley seizure in severe cases.
Similar symptoms can also result from the belt tensioner, alternator pulley, water-pump pulley, air-conditioning compressor or other drive components, so the complete system should be inspected.
Why Replacement Matters:
A worn idler bearing may initially produce only a small amount of noise, but deterioration can progress until the roller no longer rotates smoothly.
Replacing a defective idler bracket and roller helps restore:
- Smooth belt movement.
- Correct belt alignment.
- Reliable belt tracking.
- Reduced accessory-drive noise.
- Lower risk of premature belt wear.
- Reduced vibration.
- Correct accessory-drive geometry.
- Long-term reliability of surrounding components.
If an idler pulley seizes completely, the moving belt can overheat, shred or break.
