What The Components Do:
- Brake Pads: Provide the friction material that the calipers clamp onto the rotors when braking. They wear down over time and determine the initial braking force and pedal feel.
- Brake Discs / Rotors: These are the surfaces the pads contact; they absorb and dissipate the kinetic energy from braking. Proper rotor thickness, flatness and condition are critical for safe, consistent braking.
- Wear Sensor: Detects the remaining pad thickness and alerts the driver (via dashboard indicator) when the pads reach their wear limit. Ensures that the brake pads are replaced before excessive wear causes rotor damage or reduced braking capacity.
- Brake pedal feels “soft” or you notice longer stopping distances or less “bite”.
- Squealing or grinding noises coming from front brakes (indicative of worn pads or damaged rotors).
- Vibrations or pulsing through the brake pedal or steering wheel under braking (often rotor warp or surface irregularity).
- Pad wear warning light illuminated (for cars fitted with wear sensors).
- Visual inspection shows pad thickness low, rotor surface badly scored or groove depth exceeded, or rotor minimum thickness below specification.
