Nose bearing, No 8. Standard size.
Standard-size crankshaft main bearing (No. 8), also referred to as bearing VIII. Main bearings support the crankshaft by providing a low-friction, precision bearing surface between the crankshaft journals and the engine block’s bearing bores.

Fits:
Porsche 911 1978 - 1989
Porsche 964 1989 - 1994
Porsche 993 1994 - 1998
Porsche 996 Turbo 2000 - 2005

Diagram ref no 24.

The crankshaft main bearings carry the forces created as combustion pressures act on the pistons and connecting rods. They help:
Maintain smooth engine rotation
 Prevent metal-to-metal contact
Distribute loads across the crankshaft journals
Preserve oil film integrity between moving parts

A standard-size bearing is used when the crankshaft journals are within factory tolerances. If journals are worn and undersizing is required, undersized bearings would be selected instead.

Crankshaft main bearings are subjected to extreme rotational forces, pressure, heat, and oil shear. Over time bearings can:
Wear down and lose oil film thickness
 Develop scoring or surface fatigue
 Lose proper clearances

Symptoms of worn main bearings can include:
Knocking or rattling noises from the engine
  Reduced oil pressure
  Increased vibration
  Premature wear of crankshaft journals

Replacing worn or damaged bearings restores correct oil clearances, improves crankshaft support, reduces friction, and helps ensure reliable engine performance - especially critical in high-boost turbocharged engines where bearing loads are higher.

Replace this bearing if you notice:
  Engine knocking or abnormal noises
Low oil pressure or pressure fluctuation
High mileage and engine teardown for rebuild
During complete engine overhaul or rebuild
When journal wear necessitates standard or undersized bearing selection
