Mounted within the rear bumper, the sensor detects nearby obstacles when reversing and sends distance information to the ParkAssist system, which warns the driver as the vehicle approaches an object.

What Does the Rear Parking Sensor Do?

The parking sensor uses ultrasonic signals to detect objects behind the vehicle. When reverse parking, the ParkAssist control system uses information from the sensors to determine how close the rear bumper is to an obstacle.

As the distance decreases, the system provides an increasingly urgent audible warning to help the driver judge the available space.

Why Do Parking Sensors Fail?

Rear parking sensors are exposed to water, dirt, road salt, vibration and changing temperatures. Over time, this can lead to:

  • Internal sensor failure
  • Water or moisture ingress
  • Corroded electrical connections
  • Physical damage from minor bumper impacts
  • Damaged wiring or connectors
  • Contamination around the sensor face

A failed sensor can cause incorrect warnings or prevent the ParkAssist system from operating correctly.

When Should It Be Replaced?

Replacement may be required if the ParkAssist system produces a fault warning, gives continuous or inaccurate alerts, or fails to recognise obstacles.

Before replacing the sensor, check the wiring, connector and sensor mounting position. Diagnostic testing can help identify which sensor or circuit is responsible for the fault.

For vehicles equipped with factory ParkAssist; Porsche parts documentation identifies the sensor under option code M635.

Checks Before Replacement

Before fitting a new sensor, check:

  • ParkAssist fault codes
  • Sensor wiring and connector
  • Rear bumper wiring loom
  • Sensor mounting and alignment
  • Sensor seal
  • Signs of impact damage
  • Corrosion or moisture around the connector
