What Does the Front Wishbone Control Arm Do?

The front wishbone is a major suspension component connecting the wheel assembly to the vehicle chassis. It allows controlled suspension movement while maintaining the position and geometry of the front wheel.

Together with the ball joint, bushes, strut and steering components, the control arm helps maintain accurate wheel alignment and predictable steering during braking, cornering and driving over uneven surfaces.

Why Do Porsche 964 Control Arms Need Replacing?

On the Porsche 964, deterioration of the control arm bushings is a common age-related issue. The rubber can deteriorate regardless of mileage, allowing unwanted movement within the suspension.

Replacement may also be required because of:

Worn or deteriorated control arm bushes Corrosion Accident or impact damage Distorted suspension geometry Damage around the ball joint mounting Previous poor-quality suspension repairs

Because these replacement wishbones are supplied with bushings installed, they provide a straightforward solution where complete arm replacement is preferable to rebuilding the original component.

When Should It Be Replaced?

Typical signs of control arm or bushing wear can include:

Clunking or knocking over bumps Loose or vague steering Steering wheel vibration Uneven tyre wear Vehicle wandering or pulling Excessive movement at the suspension arm Difficulty maintaining correct wheel alignment

These symptoms can also be caused by other suspension or steering components, so the complete front suspension should be inspected before replacement.

Checks During Replacement

When replacing the wishbone, also inspect:

Front ball joint Opposite control arm and bushings Anti-roll bar components Steering track rods Front dampers and top mounts Wheel bearings Suspension mounting points Associated bolts and fasteners

A wheel alignment should be checked after suspension control arm replacement to ensure the front suspension geometry is correctly set.
