The kit contains two 142-link closed timing chains, one 60-link closed chain and two timing chain tensioners. It is suitable for selected Porsche 987.2, 981, 997.2 and 991.1 engines. 

What Does the Timing Chain Kit Do?

The camshaft timing chains transfer rotation from the crankshaft to the camshafts, keeping valve operation correctly synchronised with piston movement.

The oil pump drive chain transfers mechanical drive to the oil pump, which circulates pressurised engine oil through the lubrication system.

Both systems are critical to reliable engine operation.

Why Do Timing Chains and Tensioners Wear?

Timing components operate continuously whenever the engine is running. Over time, wear can develop through:

High mileage Chain and tensioner wear Poor or infrequent oil servicing Contaminated engine oil Incorrect chain tension Wear to associated guides or sprockets Previous internal engine problems

A worn timing system can produce chain noise or timing-related faults and, in severe cases, may affect correct camshaft timing.

When Should They Be Replaced?

Timing components should be inspected if there is abnormal chain noise, timing-related fault codes, excessive chain wear or evidence of tensioner problems.

They should also be carefully assessed during an engine rebuild or other major work where the timing system is already accessible.

Associated guides, sprockets and other timing components should be inspected at the same time.

Checks During Installation

When replacing the timing chains, also inspect:

• Timing chain guide rails
• Chain sprockets
• Camshaft timing components
• Oil pump drive components
• Tensioner contact surfaces
• Engine oil condition
• Oil passages
• Related seals and fasteners

Correct engine timing must be established using the appropriate Porsche engine timing procedure and specialist tools.
