Reconditioned* Control unit for ignition timing adjustment.

Please note:
Reconditioned units are sold on an exchange basis, a surcharge will be held and then refunded when the old one is returned.*

Fits:
Porsche 928  1988 - 1988
Porsche 928  1990 - 1991 with Automatic transmission (PR:249)

Diagram ref no 3

This module manages the ignition timing and spark control within the engine management system (LH-Jetronic) to ensure accurate ignition advance, optimum combustion, smooth engine running and compliance with factory tuning targets.

Position on Vehicle: Engine bay - installed in the ECU/ignition control module rack, typically behind the left front/fuse area or ignition electronics bay of the Porsche 928.

Cross-Reference / Alternative Numbers: 928 618 124 12,  928 618 124 14,  928 618 124 15, -  Current reference: 928 618 124 RX

Applications: Intended for replacement when the original ignition control unit has failed, is causing engine management faults, erratic timing behaviour, misfiring, or when restoring the engine electronics to factory specification.

An ignition control unit governs when spark is delivered to each cylinder and under what conditions (load, RPM, temperature). A faulty or degraded module can result in poor engine performance, hard starting, misfires, low power, increased fuel consumption or emissions, and may even trigger engine management warning lights. Installing a genuine Porsche replacement ensures proper timing behaviour, correct diagnostics and retains factory tuning - critical for preserving performance and reliability in the 928 series.

* PLEASE NOTE:
  • The surcharge for this reconditioned part will be refunded when the exchange unit is received and approved by us and the relevant manufacturer.
  • Please note, surcharge refunds often take an average of 6 to 8 weeks to be approved by the manufacturer.
  • Acceptance of the exchange part is at the manufacturer's discretion, based on the part being fit for reconditioning.
  • All surcharges and exchanges are subject to our terms and conditions.

About Ignition Control Units

Ignition Control Units – Precision Spark Management for Porsche Performance

Ignition control units (ICUs) are vital components in Porsche’s ignition systems, responsible for controlling the timing and strength of the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the engine. Working in conjunction with sensors, ignition coils, and the ECU, these modules ensure efficient combustion, smooth acceleration, and reliable performance across all driving conditions.

At Design911, we stock a complete range of genuine and high-quality ignition control units for various Porsche models. Each unit is precision-engineered to deliver accurate ignition timing, improved combustion efficiency, and long-term durability — keeping your Porsche performing at its peak.

What Do Ignition Control Units Do?

The ignition control unit regulates spark timing and coil charging, ensuring each cylinder fires at precisely the right moment. Key functions include:

  • Managing ignition timing for efficient fuel combustion.
  • Coordinating signals between the crankshaft sensor and ignition coils.
  • Optimising engine performance under varying load and speed conditions.
  • Improving cold-start reliability and overall drivability.
  • A well-functioning ignition control unit is essential for maintaining power delivery, throttle response, and fuel efficiency in both classic and modern Porsche engines.

Why Do Ignition Control Units Fail?

Ignition control units operate in harsh environments, exposed to heat, vibration, and electrical load. Over time, these conditions can lead to failure. Common causes include:

  • Thermal stress from prolonged heat exposure.
  • Electrical overloads or short circuits.
  • Corrosion or damaged connectors.
  • Component fatigue from age and vibration.
  • Voltage spikes from faulty coils or sensors.

When an ignition control unit fails, it can cause engine misfires, starting difficulties, poor acceleration, or complete ignition loss.

Why Replace a Faulty Ignition Control Unit?

A failing ignition control unit can lead to inconsistent performance, reduced fuel economy, and damage to other ignition components. Replacing it restores ignition precision, reliability, and overall engine performance.

Benefits of replacement include:

  • Accurate spark timing and improved combustion.
  • Smoother acceleration and throttle response.
  • Reduced misfires and emissions.
  • Reliable engine starting and performance.

All ignition control units in our range are designed with advanced electronic circuitry and heat-resistant housings, ensuring precise signal processing, stable operation, and long-term reliability for all Porsche models.
